Green Square Primary School
Zetland, New South Wales
The team explored a number of themes that are centred around the student/child experience. We are determined to make a place where children feel welcome, are invited to explore, imagine and enjoy learning.
-
The primary themes explored in the development of the Green Square Primary School were:
Learning landscapes
The terraces invite both play and learning. Informal presentation/ demonstration/performance spaces create opportunities for a diverse range of activities beyond the classroom. The real world is abstracted with spaces, shapes and places that illicit the cave, canopy, hill, valley, house, and clouds, providing children with a range of spaces to inhabit and promote imagination.
Making high rise feel connected to the ground
The terraces tier upward with landscapes to minimise the effect of elevation and maintain strong connections to the ground.
An urban response for children
The Green Square Primary Square will become an oasis for children from the rigid urban fabric. Beginning with the invitation to enter through brick arched thresholds that celebrate diversity and delight to the playful terraced balconies that step from the ground to the upper levels.
Making sense of place for little people
The building draws from its context of heritage brickwork with its delightful arches, ogee curves, variety of windows, and spires with a scale that is a relief from the eventual high density of Green Square.
