Griffith Film School

Brisbane, Meanjin, Queensland

The historic South Brisbane GPO, Library and Hall was adaptively converted into the Griffith Universities Film School with a sound stage and recording room, editing suites and teaching spaces along with administration.

Overall, the project aims to balance the preservation of historical elements with the introduction of contemporary interventions that enhance the building's functionality and aesthetic appeal. The careful detailing and articulation of new elements against the backdrop of the original structure create a visually striking contrast while contributing to the building's overall narrative and sense of place.

  • Preservation of Original Building

The original building was stripped of non-significant linings to reveal its historical layers and character. The plaster walls were stabilized by an art conservator, retaining even the graffiti that contributes to the building's history.

    Integration of New Extension

The new extension features a simple palette of materials and a distinct form that complements the original structure. It aims to improve circulation within the building and create visual interest through the use of contrasting materials like masonry, polycarbonate, and glass.

    Artistic Expression

The design approach is described as a cinematic metaphor, where the new extension, especially when illuminated at night, creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, emphasizing movement and adding a contemporary touch to the architectural composition.
