Griffith University Technical Annex – Supporting the Future of Science

As part of ongoing strategic master planning at the Nathan campus, Griffith University is progressing the development of a new Technical Annex (TA) to support the dynamic needs of the Griffith Sciences Group (GSC).

The Technical Annex will be located on the site of the now-redundant Central Chiller Plant (N45) and adjacent car park, repurposing this space for innovative academic and research infrastructure. Designed in close consultation with GSC stakeholders and Griffith University’s engineering team, the facility will accommodate a range of technical and research functions essential to GSC’s growing operations.

Through a collaborative series of briefing workshops and a comprehensive Value Management process, the design has been refined to ensure functionality, future expansion potential, and cost-efficiency. Key adjustments include:

Glasshouses reduced from four controlled and four non-controlled to two of each, with deck space retained for future additions.

CT rooms on Level 2 reduced from four to two, with provision for future installation if funding permits.

The project has now reached the Developed Design phase, which includes detailed room layouts, spatial planning, infrastructure connections, and traffic and loading arrangements. Final Space Description Forms (SDFs) have been prepared to support this phase and define each area’s function and requirements.

The new Technical Annex represents Griffith University’s commitment to delivering high-performance, future-ready infrastructure that supports cutting-edge science education and research.
