Wilson Architects were engaged to master plan a city block within Cairns to form the framework for phased development of the University Hospital. (Education, Research and Clinical Practice). The plan centres on a new urban space for the tropics with deep connections to indigenous place. Consultation with traditional owners informed the design which proposed endemic tropical species as well as indigenous medical plants. Consideration was given to gathering spaces for broad community engagement.
Patients need places and spaces to leave the clinical environment behind and connect with nature in order to heal. That is why we see the integration of landscape architecture into our projects as an inherent necessity in the support of health and well-being of all users.
By establishing natural and relaxing places within healthcare environments, we strive to create a complimentary balance with clinical elements to improve the human experience during the healing process.
