Brisbane, Meanjin, Queensland

Wilson Landscape Architects joined the successful John Holland bid to design the landscape journey from Annerley Road through Dutton Park to the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus.

The design balances cultural sensitivity with accessibility—creating pedestrian, cyclist, and bus routes that respect the area’s natural and historical character.

Key sustainability initiatives included:

Rock-lined swales for natural stormwater infiltration

Bio-retention basins with native macrophyte plantings

Solar-powered lighting via rooftop collectors at Dutton Park Place

A diverse palette of locally sourced Australian plants enhances both the ecological function and visual appeal of the route, fostering a healthy and connected urban green corridor.

  • Project Vision

Create an integrated, culturally respectful landscape corridor that connects Annerley Road through Dutton Park to UQ St Lucia, balancing accessibility, sustainability, and ecological integrity.

    Design Principles

Connectivity: Prioritise seamless movement for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users.

Cultural Sensitivity: Respect the natural and historical context of Dutton Park and the UQ precinct.

Ecological Enhancement: Use native plant species and habitat-supportive design to foster biodiversity.

Sustainability: Implement low-impact, future-focused water and energy systems.

    Key Design Strategies

Pathway Integration: Gentle grades and clear wayfinding to accommodate all users.

    Stormwater Management:

Rock-lined swales to return overland flows to the ground

Bio-retention basins planted with native macrophytes

    Renewable Energy:

Solar collectors at Dutton Park Place shelter to power lighting

    Planting Design:

Emphasis on local Australian species for ecological resilience and visual interest

Layered vegetation structure (ground covers, shrubs, trees) to create a naturalistic experience
