Veranda Walk
Brisbane, Meanjin, Queensland
At the heart of JCU’s Townsville campus, the new Verandah Walk redefines the connection between north and south campus through landscape. Designed by Wilson Architects, this 420m pedestrian and cycle path winds through eucalypt forest, tropical plantings, and across Waada Mooli Creek, blending architecture with nature.
The walkway’s design responds directly to the varied landscape—curved paths with reflective soffits weave through dense greenery, while straight segments with bright green undersides highlight views and frame natural elements. Polished aluminium soffits mirror the ground below, enhancing the sensory experience.
Pavilions offer shaded, connected outdoor learning spaces. Cooling fountains and open views toward the mountains create moments of calm and orientation. The path not only moves students across campus—it celebrates the tropical ecology, bringing together light, breeze, shade, and water in a uniquely regional response.
